The Charcoal Club of Baltimore was established in 1883 when some daring artists shocked the public by hiring a model to pose unclothed. Despite public outcry, the life sessions and the club flourished exerting a profound effect on the cultural life of Baltimore in the early 20th century. To this day, the Charcoal Club continues to support traditional realism in fine art painting, drawing, and sculpture.

Philipp Meyer is the subject of Rita Curtis's painting, "The Writer."
Meyer's first novel, American Rust, has been selected as an amazon.com "Best Books of February 2009." Impressed with the Hemingway-like quality of American Rust, best-selling detective novelist Patricia Cornwell referenced Meyer's book in Scarpetta, her latest work.
